How to Use Ozempic Pen?
Using an Ozempic pen correctly is crucial for managing diabetes effectively. Ozempic (semaglutide) is a medication prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar control, and it’s administered through a pre-filled, multi-dose injection pen.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use an Ozempic pen:
Preparation:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Check the pen: Ensure you have the correct medication and dose. The Ozempic pen comes in different doses (0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, etc.), so verify that you are using the correct pen.
- Inspect the pen: Remove the cap and check that the medication is clear and colorless. Do not use it if it appears cloudy or contains particles.
Attach a New Needle:
- Remove the seal: Take a new needle, remove its protective seal, and attach it to the pen by screwing it on until it is tight.
- Remove needle caps: Take off the outer needle cap and keep it aside (you’ll need it later), then remove the inner needle cap and dispose of it.
- Prime the Ozempic Pen (First-time Use):
Set the dose:
- Turn the dose selector to the flow check symbol (a dot with lines around it).
- Prime: Hold the pen with the needle pointing up, press and hold the dose button until the dose counter returns to 0. You should see a drop of medication at the tip of the needle. This ensures the pen is ready for use and removes air bubbles.
Inject the Dose:
- Choose the injection site: Common sites include the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites to avoid skin problems.
- Clean the area: Use an alcohol swab to clean the skin where you will inject.
Inject:
- Pinch the skin lightly and insert the needle at a 90-degree angle. Press and hold the dose button until the dose counter returns to 0. Keep the needle in the skin for at least 6 seconds to ensure the full dose is delivered.
Remove the needle:
- After 6 seconds, release the dose button and remove the needle from your skin.
Dispose of the Needle:
- Place the outer needle cap back on and unscrew the needle. Dispose of the needle in a sharps container.
Store the Pen:
- Replace the pen cap and store it in a cool place, away from direct light. Do not store it with the needle attached.
